Clues and Theories: Argideen House

SPOILER ALERT! Ready for some clues and spoilers found in the last book?

Argideen House: a squarely built Georgian style house, located near the village of Timoleague, Ireland.

Based on The Missing Sister, it is where Merry/ Mary was originally born. If Elle is Merry’s mother, this also puts Elle in Ireland and most likely on Argideen House in 1949, one year after the property was sold in 1948.

1920 – Nuala, Lady Fitzgerald and Philip

We first visit Argideen House, also called Big House, in 1920 when Nuala, 19 years old, is requested to come work there as a nurse for the Great war victim Philip Fitzgerald.

Nuala has a double agenda, as a member of the IRA/Cumann na mBan and the British Fitzgeralds had connections and information that Nuala could bring back home.

The Secret Rose Garden and The Armillary Sphere

Nuala takes Philip out in the garden, and we learn that she has a private garden at Argideen House in 1920.

Similar to that of Pa Salt at Atlantis:

  • The garden is full of roses
  • It has a central paved area where in the middle, some kind of round ornament is located – a sundial (aka. Armillary sphere).
  • Lady Fitzgerald planted the garden herself, with plants her husband had brought back from his travels around the world.
  • Lady Fitzgerald refers to the garden as a “secret garden”

Does the above not seem awfully familiar?!

Hereby the description of Pa Salt’s “Secret garden at Atlantis:

  • It has a rose garden, where Pa Salt often sat
  • It contains flowers that Pa Salt had gathered on his travels around the world
  • An Armillary Sphere showed up in it right after Pa Salt disappeared/died

1948 – Argideen House was sold, the buyer unknown

After Philips’s death in 1920 The Fitzgeralds moved back to London in 1921, leaving Argideen House empty for many years.

In 1949 – Merry/Mary was born at Argideen House

She was then left at Father O’Brien’s doorstep at his nearby home, with the emerald ring in her wicker basket. We believe Elle possibly gave birth to her there, before dying as a result of the labor. The baby was a large one, and it was commented that the delivery could have been tough.

Throughout the 1950’s Nora, Merry/Mary’s (adopted) sister used to work there during the shooting season and when the family was there in the summer. This family’s name was Eszu.

The deeds for the house were sent to Marylebone in London when Argideen was sold after WW2. Marylebone is bordering to where Queen Mary’s rose garden is located. Elle, which we believe is Merry/Mary’s mother – was called “The Rose”. If Mary was born in Argideen House, and knowing all of the above – I don’t think this is a coincidence, do you?

QUESTIONS

  • Why was Elle at Argideen House in November 1949, and where was Pa Salt (if he was indeed the father of Merry/Mary)?
  • What happened during 1948 and 1949?
  • Which Eszu couple was at the house during the summer and shooting season in the 1950’s?
  • Were the Eszu’s the actual owners of the house? Or did they borrow it from another London based family?

Based on my timeline, the following events took place in 1949:

If Elle is Merry/Mary’s mother, she must have gotten pregnant around late January, February 1949. If Pa Salt is the father, and he is the haunted gray man Kitty meets on the ship leaving for Australia, then they must have met right before he left.

Kreeg Eszu’s 30 year younger wife is 2 years old in 1947. This means that the Eszu’s that were staying/residing at Argideen house after WW2 were NOT Kreeg and his wife. Zed was not even born yet, so who was there?

A FEW MORE QUESTIONS:

  • Is Elle an Eszu too? Did Elle and Pa Salt (Mr and Mrs Tanit) reside here after they suddenly left High Weald in 1944? Did they maybe take Elle’s surname?
  • Or is Pa Salt really an Eszu? Could he be Kreeg’s younger brother?
  • I will revert at a later point with my theories on the last one..

Oh, and did you know that Argideen House in The Missing Sister actually exist? Its located in Ballycatteen, Timoleague, Co. Cork, Ierland. HERE you can see it on Google Maps, and how it looks like from the street view HERE.

    1. Howdy this is somewhat of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    6. What about Mrs Cavanagh?
She works till 1948 in Argideen House when it was buyed by “Eszu”. Why did she stop to work there? Obviously, they still need somebody since Nora worked there.

      1. ahh good one! I have no idea actually.. but maybe the eszu’s were only there during the season? and that the house was empty for the rest of the year, so there was no need for someone permanently? I think Nora only worked there sometimes when the family was there?

    7. On the note of who were the Ezus in the house back then. Could it be Kreeg and a first wife potentially? Or his parents but as they are never mentioned I don’t believe it could have been them. Also don’t think that Kreeg waiting until he was in his 50s to get married for the first time, which would be the case if Zeds mum was his first wife. And even though I can’t recall any reference that Zeds mum was not the first wife to me this is the most logical explanation.
Or a bit more if a wide stretch could it be kregg and Elle that he somehow still has kidnapped and claims that she is his wife? Not sure if that would add up with the timeline of the ezus first appearing at Argideen house though.
